The Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works TV anime just began broadcasting this October. The anime series is based on a popular romantic visual light novel series by Type-Moon and was adapted into a high quality TV anime by the renowned animators at Ufotable.
The details regarding the Fate/Stay Night video release schedule have been made public. On March 25, 2015, Blu-ray Box I will be released. The box set will include all 13 episodes of the first season.
What’s most surprising about this announcement is that they haven't released individual volumes, and instead have gone directly to a Blu-ray box set. Typically, TV anime series announce individual volumes first and then release a box set a few years after the series has finished airing.
The same release process was done with the first Fate/Zero anime and met with great success, so it appears they are following the same process with Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. It’s apparent that the creators want fans to be able to enjoy the series in its entirety.
But that’s not all that’s special about this Blu-ray box. It also includes special footage that all fans should see. First of all, it contains the complete original director’s cut editions of all 13 episodes, #00 through #12, including previously unaired footage. Parts that could not be aired on TV are included as well. The special features include promotional videos, advertisements as well as the opening and ending sequences without the credits.
Furthermore, Hideyuki Fukasawa’s musical score, including new songs that feature guest composer Yuki Kajiura, are included on a soundtrack CD. Also included are Kinoko Nasu’s original novel (illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi), as well as a 50-page special booklet. With visuals, music, a novel, and special materials, this Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Season 1 box set is all you could ask for. The retail price is 39,000 JPY (tax not included).
For those fans who want to enjoy this box set for a lower cost, I recommend renting the DVD. Preorders for the DVD rental begin in November. On Nov. 26, Volume 1, which includes “Episode #00: Prologue” will be released. On Dec. 24, Volume 2, which includes “Episode #01: Winter Day, Fateful Night” will also be released. Both of these releases also include the previously unaired footage from the series featured in the Blu-ray box set.
