Sweets expressing the world of games are hot right now on Twitter, and cute confectionary transformations of familiar characters from Kirby’s Dream Land and Pikmin are picking up attention.
The creator of these wonderful works is Japanese student StarStone who expresses her favorite game characters using cookies, cupcakes, and other sweets. Her newest work “Kirby and the Amazing Mirror Tart” has acheived more than 10,000 retweets and 12,000 favorites. There are also many comments.
TOM recently sat down with StarStone to talk about how long production is, her troubles during production, what works she likes, and more. Read on and learn the secret to making sweets that will fascinate people!
TOM: When did you start expressing the world of games through confections, and how did you get into this?
I’ve always loved Nintendo games, and about a year ago I somehow or other made a Kirby cake. After I did, I received many thoughts and reactions and that was the catalyst for me to begin making sweets of various game characters. Since then I have been making not merely sweets of characters, but I also started this year making sweets based on the worlds of games after thinking that I wanted to express the entirety of game worlds. I hope that as many people as possible enjoy my sweets.
TOM: How long does it take to create your work (Including the design)?
It takes about a week to think up the design and what materials I will need and buy them, about a day to make the foundation (cupcake or tart), one to two days to create the parts (cookies and marzipan), one day for the arrangement (making the cream and icing)...after all’s said and done, it generally takes about 10 days. However, because I’m dealing with food my aim is to create them as fast as possible.
TOM: What is the hardest part about creating your work?
The hardest part is making characters using marzipan! The size can be as small as a marble so it takes considerable concentration. But that is also the most rewarding part of my work!
TOM: Of the works you have created so far, which one is your favorite?
My favorite work is the cupcake I made after Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards! Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is a game that I fondly remember playing for the first time, so I enjoyed making it.
TOM: What do you do with the confections you create? Do you eat all of them?
After taking pictures of the confections I make I eat them together with my friends and family.
