In our previous article, we reported on the display booths and staff discussions of the joint event between Kyoto Animation and Animation Do, KyoAni & Do CTFK 2013. In this article, we are going to report on the stage shows of two anime, Beyond the Boundary and the second season of Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions ( Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! ), which were held on the same day at a different venue.
Beyond the Boundary Stage Show
The event started with the MC duo of Risa Taneda (Mirai Kuriyama) and Yuri Yamaoka (Ai Shindo). The first subject was their clothing, and they talked to the audience about how they chose their clothing in accordance with the characters they play. However, Taneda wasn’t wearing any pink, which is Mirai’s image color, so the hall became noisy when Yamaoka pointed it out and teased her. Then, the public recording of the currently on-air radio program for Beyond the Boundary called Fuyukai Radio started.
The two MCs had arrived to Kyoto the day before the event, so they talked about how they visited Kiyomizu-dera. After that, the three special guests came forward: Kenn (Akihito Kanbara), Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Hiroomi Nase), and Minori Chihara (Mitsuki Nase)! With this, all the main participants lined up. Kenn livened up the hall when he threw out the subject of glasses and hinted at his character, saying, “Hey everyone! Do you like glasses? Yeah, I love them, too!”
The first subject of the discussion was the recording of the forthcoming duet singles between Mirai Kuriyama & Mitsuki Nase and Akihito Kanbara & Hiroomi Nase. The discussion then moved toward hobbies, and when Kenn revealed his hobby, “decorating goods and portable game machines with rhinestones,” voices of surprise came forth from both the cast and the fans.
Next came a quiz segment titled “Questions from the Boundary.” It was very simple - if the five participants all gave the same answer to the question, the answer was accepted.
The first question was, “What are Kyoto’s sightseeing spots?” Kenn and Taneda answered “Kiyomizu-dera,” Suzuki and Yamaoka said “KyoAni,” and Chihara gave the name of a local sushi restaurant. The next question was, “What do you put on udon?” However, this question was easily answered, as all five of them said “green onions” after seeing it on the udon on the illustration projected. With this, the first segment ended.
The next segment revealed the raw recitation skills of the participants with a freshly written scenario. According to the story, a youmu appeared in the school Akihito and the others go to, and in the crossing of such harm, a female student’s glasses were licked all over. Of course, Akihito, who holds an abnormally strong love for glasses, is accused, and they start looking for the culprit. This slapstick comedy that unfolded in front of the fans had a different kind of fun from the serious anime, and there were laughs to be heard during the whole play.
After the recitation segment ended, another special guest came out: the director of the anime, Taichi Ishidate. He then introduced a scene, an underplot from the current story that is linked to Episode 10.
The last part of the show was a performance by Minori Chihara, who sung the opening theme “Kyokai no Kanata.” The fans were simultaneously waving their blue neon sticks, the image color of Chihara, along to the music. And so the event concluded, leaving behind a beautiful visual.
Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions Stage Show
In contrast with the Beyond the Boundary event where the 2 MCs came out first, here, the five-person main cast––Jun Fukuyama (Yuuta Togashi), Maaya Uchida (Rikka Takanashi), Chinatsu Akasaki (Shinka Nibutani), Azumi Asakura (Kumin Tsuyuri), and Sumire Uesaka (Sanae Dekomori)––appeared on stage together. Not only that, all of them were wearing matching costumes, making the tension rise from the get-go!
As the cast was discussing the highlights of the second season, Uchida described it as “amazing, high-quality animation, just like before,” and Fukuyama said, “As the movie ended with a cliffhanger, now you will be able to see the story that follows.” Right after that, they held an advance screening of the first episode of season two.
After the advance screening, there was a quiz segment for the currently on-going radio program of the anime, Yami no Honoo ni Dakarete Kike. The quiz consisted of the following: The questions had a five-character answer which the participants had to write on a board character-by-character, thus creating the answer together. Of course, if not all of them got the answer, they couldn’t get the right solution, so for most of the questions there was somebody giving a weird answer. In the end, the cast could only answer one out of the five questions right. Nevertheless, the hall was very lively, so as an entertaining event it was a success.
In the next segment, “Wicked Eye Improv: Banishment This World,” the embarrassing, childish performances of the cast were shown before the crowd, which on the one had resulted in each of the cast being psychologically scarred, and on the other, it was something that fans could only see at this event. Everyone seemed exhilarated, including the cast.
For the performance segment of the show, Zaq, the singer of the opening theme, appeared and performed three songs in succession: “Sparkling Daydream,” “Shikkoku ni Odoru Kodaku Haobushi,” and “Shin’en ni Mau Senritsu Shanikusai.” The big news that Zaq would be performing the opening of season two was also revealed. The new song, “Voice,” was revealed last, marking the end of the live segment.
For the last part, director Tatsuya Ishihara came on stage and talked about the highlights of season two. He said that he will make it a carefree and enjoyable anime. He also commented, “We also prepared some episodes that give more spotlight to the supporting characters,” so it seems this will be a happy season for fans of these characters.
Lastly, the official title of season two, Chunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren, and official visuals were revealed, and thus the event reached its conclusion. Chunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren is scheduled to begin broadcasting on Jan. 8, 2014. We are eager to see what developments await!
