The enticing Gundam statue standing in front of Gundam Front Tokyo in the Diver City Tokyo Plaza is easily one of the highlights of Odaiba, Tokyo. At 18 meters in height, this actual-size Gundam looks like it was plucked straight out of the Universal Century, and it is hugely popular with kids and adults alike.
The Gundam statue isn’t just displayed in its “normal mode,” however. What you may not know is that it actually changes depending on events and the season. So, depending on when you visit, you may be able to enjoy seeing a seemingly different Gundam each time.
Starting Nov. 30, the Gundam changed to a special lit up version for the winter season. Odaiba becomes especially busy from Christmas through the New Year, and it is now decorated with the “Gundam Statue Light Up Winter Ver.” Though it will be up for roughly a month and a half, from Nov. 30 to Jan. 13, what is particularly worth seeing is the Christmas version projection show “Gundam Chime Everyone’s Melody.” This show couples images, light, and sound all in a Christmas theme projected on the wall of Diver City Tokyo Plaza. The huge screen, roughly 32 meters by 11.5 meters, shows a Gundam Santa, a Char-Exclusive Zaku Santa, and more.
Also, the highly popular projection show “Gundam Stand at Jaburo” has been reborn. A short video has been added to the existing story and a new story has been developed. Highlights include a tri-colored Acguy and more. The LED illumination under the statue’s feet give it a fantastical look that is likely to double its impact.
With the release of the final chapter in the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series announced and the start of Gundam Build Fighters, 2013 has been another popular year for the Gundam series. This momentum is likely to continue even into 2014. The Gundam statue in Odaiba also has a part in such an upsurge in its popularity.
