The Unending Evolution of Games! Tokyo Game Show 2013 Is Drawing Near!

Japan’s biggest game-related event, Tokyo Game Show 2013 (TGS), will be held for four days starting from Sept. 19. According to the schedule, the 19th and 20th, which fall on weekdays, will be Business Days, and the weekend of the 21-22 will be Public Days. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day (on Public Days, the gates might open at 9:30 depending on the situation). The full exhibition area of Makuhari Messe (63,000 m 2) is being used for the event, and there will be 342 companies present (as of Aug. 30). It is estimated that roughly 200,000 guests will attend during the event’s four-day duration.

This year’s theme for TGS is “The continuing evolution of games.” Not only can attendees try in advance upcoming games from Japan’s biggest game makers––such as Sega, Namco Bandai Games, Capcom, and Square Enix––there will also be a corner for smartphone, SNS, and cloud games, and attendees can also find out about modern games that are no longer exclusive to any one hardware.

There is one among the game corners that is particularly in the center of attention: the PlayStation 4 which is planned to release in Japan on Feb. 22 of next year. There will be a chance to experience first-hand about 15 titles that are currently under development, including Deep Down, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It is recommended that you go to the game of your choice as soon as possible, as congestion is also anticipated (but no running to the booths because that’s dangerous!).

There are also loads of events less closely related to games, such as the screening of the original works based on three games: Silent Hill: Revelation, Sengoku Basara: The Last Party, and Resident Evil: Retribution. Also, “Cosplay Collection Night @TGS” will be held on the event stage of Hall No. 8 /on event stages of 8 halls on the 21st. Moreover, this year, there will be an international lounge for the first time, which will provide an area for people all over the world to deepen their connections. There will also be an information corner at which to have questions regarding sightseeing in Tokyo and Japanese pop culture answered. This year, the event planners are striving to make TGS worthwhile for overseas participants.
