Otaku Midsummer Event Comiket Opening Day Draws 210,000 Visitors!

On Aug. 10, Comic Market 84, a three-day event that is the largest doujinshi distribution event in the world, began at Tokyo Big Sight. The first day drew a massive crowd of approximately 210,000 visitors who overflowed the grounds with their passion for otaku culture.

Visitors toughed out nearly 40°C (104°F) sweltering weather at the grounds of the event. Lines formed near food booths and convenience stores in the area for those waiting to purchase cold drinking water. In such blistering heat, a great number of cosplayers were still participating outside at the exclusive area for cosplay and posing for the requests of cameramen greatly sweating from the relentless heat and humidity.

A group of four visitors from the Netherlands told us while laughing that they had come for sightseeing but hadn’t known there would be such a crowd and panic. Another from the group said he came to purchase anime goods and cosplay photo collections and then return back to the Netherlands. He brought along the other three, and while in high spirits, he pushed through the crowd.

Comic Market is quite well-known overseas and such popularity was shown, as throughout the first day throngs of tourists from Southeast Asia, Northern Europe, and other various countries attended.
