Popular Manga “Black Butler” to Become Live-Action Film with Entirely New Story

The popular manga Black Butler, which is currently serialized in the monthly publication G Fantasy, is becoming a live-action film to be released in the spring of 2014. To date, the manga has more than 15 million copies in print. On April 5, new information regarding the movie was announced.

Regarding the cast, the decision to appoint Hiro Mizushima to the role of the main butler Sebastian Michaelis made headlines when it was announced earlier this year on January 9. Newly announced for the cast is Ayame Gouriki who will be playing the role of Shiori Genpo, a female proprietress who crossdresses as a man.

The setting for the movie has also been changed from the manga. The movie takes place 130 years after the manga in the year 2020 in an Asian city where Western and Asian cultures have been mixed together. Since the movie will have an entirely new story, even fans who have already read the manga will enjoy it.

Regarding the film adaptation, original creator Yana Toboso commented, “I heard that Gouriki is playing an original character who crossdresses as a man, and I am really liking the aesthetics of the setting! I can’t wait until it’s released.”

Even the creator himself seems fully onboard with this film adaptation. Make sure to see it when it releases next spring.
