TAF 2013: Anime is Created from Fans’ Drawings of “Naruto” at Anime Workshop

Among those reading this, there are surels those who have created their own anime illustrations before, right? However, most people would probably still say no. Even knowing that you can make your drawings come to life by drawing in the style of a flip book, creating countless drawings by yourself is extremely tedious work. So what if a large number of people each just created one drawing?

At Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2013, we found an unusual booth that was doing just that. A large number of attendees were sitting at desks with their full attention on drawing something. It took many more than 30 minutes. When we walked closer, we saw that they were drawing Naruto’s face. However, comparing many of their drawings, we only saw very slight differences. We found out that each participant was tracing a single cel image from the TV series Naruto Shippoden.

This anime workshop was put on by Flog Kick and animators were in attendance to act as support for the participants. Furthermore, after each drawing was completed, it was scanned and participants got to enjoy an animation of their drawing on a monitor.

It took more than 30 minutes for participants to collectively draw 20 illustrations, and when the finished anime resulting from everyone’s drawings was shown, it was very moving. At the same time though, it was hard to conceal our surprise at it only being around one second in length. Everyone was completely dumbfounded to learn that, while it took them on average 30 minutes to trace one drawing, animators routinely create 20-30 original drawings every day.

In the end, everyone was given their illustrations to keep and the workshop came to a close. The workshop was deeply interesting and everyone who participated left with a newfound respect for animators and all the work that goes into making the anime they enjoy daily.
