New Visual Released for “Princess Knight” Musical

A new visual was released on Oct. 7 for a musical based on Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight.

The Princess Knight musical is being produced in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Kodansha’s shojo manga magazine Nakayoshi. Performances will begin at ACT Theater in Akasaka, Tokyo on Nov. 12 and move to Theater Brava! in Osaka from Dec. 3.

Playing main character Sapphire is Erika Ikuta, a first generation member of Nogizaka46. Playing Hecate, a witch’s daughter and Sapphire’s love rival, is Nogizaka46 captain Reika Sakurai. Prince Franz will be played by actor Keisuke Kaminaga, who has starred in various stage plays to date including the musical The Prince of Tennis 2nd Season. The director and choreographer of the musical is Yukio Ueshima whose wide range of work ranges from traditional musicals to 2.5D musicals and includes The Prince of Tennis and South Pacific.

The manga Princess Knight was serialized in Kodansha’s Shojo Club from 1953–56. After that, a remake began serialization in Nakayoshi in 1963. The work has been adapted to the stage countless times before, with a popular installment being the 2006 musical chiefly starring members of Morning Musume.
