Popular BL Comic “Udagawachou de Mattete yo” Gets Live-Action Adaptation; Main Character is Crossdressing High School Student 0

The Boys’ Love (BL) manga Udagawachou de Mattete yo, published by Nippan, is getting a live-action adaptation that will be released at Shibuya Humax Cinema on Saturday, July 25. Thereafter, it will be released successively in theaters across Japan. The series is based on Yoshiko Hide‘s popular manga published by Shodensha in On Blue. The work tells the slightly odd romance of a high school boy who falls head over heels for a classmate he meets in Shibuya.

BL is a genre aimed at females that depicts romance between male characters. Countless works in the genre are created every year. Among them is Udagawachou de Mattete yo, a highly appreciated work that ranked fifth on the 2014 “This BL is Amazing!” ranking under Best BL Comic. The secret to its popularity is the fact that it delicately expresses the swaying hearts of two high school boys, main character Momose and the boy he loves, Yashiro.

At the time the live-action adaptation was decided, Noriko Yuasa, who makes his commercial film debut with this work, was appointed as director. Also, Hiroko Kanasugi, who has worked on film adaptations of such popular BL novels as the Takumi-kun series, has been appointed as writer. Keep your eyes on how this work will be expressed as a live-action film.

As for the performers, Mario Uroba will be playing high school student Momose who falls in love with his classmate at first sight. Uroba is a young, popular actor who won second place in the 23rd Junon Super Boy Contest and who played Eiji Kikumaru in the musical The Prince of Tennis 2nd Season. And playing the boy he falls for, Yashiro, is Ryuugi Yokota. Yokota won the special judge’s award in the 25th Junon Super Boy Content, after which time he focused mainly on TV and stage plays. He as well is an up-and-coming young actor.

The distributor, Nippan, is a large name in circulating books, but it also invests in and produces movies, with teen movies using young actors being one of its genres of choice. The company will release to theaters Seven Days by author Benio Tachibana and illustrator Rihito Takarai in June.
