‘Hirohiko Araki’s Manga Techniques’ to Be Published; Popular Author Reveals the Secrets Behind His Work

Popular manga artist Hirohiko Araki, known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure among others, will reveal the secrets behind his work. The new book Hirohiko Araki’s Manga Techniques, which focuses on how he created massively popular series, will be published by Shueisha on April 17. Because it’s Araki who is well known for his unique style, it will likely create quite a large buzz.

Drawn on the paper wrapper of the new book is Araki himself along with popular JoJo character Rohan Kishibe. This is a must-see for fans.

Hirohiko Araki debuted in 1980 with Poker Under Arms in Weekly Shonen Jump (published by Shueisha). Serialization of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure began in ‘87, and this would go on to amass tremendous popularity in Japan and abroad and become his representative work. The series is divided into several chapters and Araki’s unique style evolves with each one. The series has also collaborated with famous overseas brands in recent years on projects highly acclaimed for their creativity. Araki is also hard at work to spread the series even more.

In the new book Hirohiko Araki’s Manga Techniques, Araki, who asserts that “manga is the greatest form of ‘composite art,’” introduces for the first time how he draws manga. And he has decided to theme it after his actual work. The book explains in detail everything from Araki’s methodology to his manga techniques, including the golden ratio for necessary aesthetics when drawing, indispensable background write ups for character creation, and the storytelling skills he learned from author Hemingway, well-known for such works as The Old Man and the Sea. Araki has declared that this book will be the first and last in which he personally divulges his skills, so it’s likely to become an indispensable read for both fans of Araki and up-and-coming creators alike.

Araki himself is drawn on the paper wrapper of the new book along with popular JoJo character Rohan Kishibe. Rohan appears in part 4 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, “Diamond is Unbreakable,” as a manga artist with superhuman abilities. He is a popular character among fans, and he even has his own spin-off series in which he is the leading man titled Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. The illustration of both of these great manga artists is likely to become a huge hit.

Araki also commented on the book, giving insight into his confidence in it, saying, “Industry secrets will be made public in this book, so, to me, honestly, the book is a disadvantage.” Hirohiko Araki’s Manga Techniques will hit shelves on April 17. It costs 780 yen (plus tax).
