Shueisha has announced that Kuroko’s Basketball Volume 24 (written by Tadatoshi Fujimaki) and Ansatsu Kyōshitsu Volume 6 (written by Yuusei Matsui) have reached more than 1 million first edition copies sold, which is a first for both works. Both of these titles are very popular manga being serialized in the male-oriented Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Weekly Shonen Jump has delivered lots of big hits to the world, but there are only a handful with more than 1 million first edition copies sold, 18 titles to be exact, which makes Kuroko’s Basketball and Ansatsu Kyōshitsu the 19th and 20th in line. By giving Death Note (original work: Tsugumi Oba, manga: Takeshi Obata), or even before that, Naruto (Masashi Kishimoto) and Bleach (Taito Kubo) as examples, it is easy to understand the volume of this brilliant achievement.

Also, although Weekly Shonen Jump has a history of 45 years, this is the first time that two of its titles have reached this mighty milestone at the same time. Therefore, in order to commemorate such an accomplishment, a special campaign has commenced. First, every person who buys the 24th volume of Kuroko’s Basketball or the sixth volume of Ansatsu Kyōshitsu will be presented with a special collaboration illustration. Moreover, in the digital Jump Book Store, Volumes 1-5 of Kuroko’s Basketball and Volume 1 of Ansatsu Kyōshitsu are being distributed free of charge. This will probably increase the number of fans for both works even further.

Posters of Kuroko’s Basketball and Ansatsu Kyōshitsu commemorating the breakthrough of 1 million copies sold are posted at stations in cities across Japan. This also started from Sept. 30 at the following stations: Nanboku Line Sapporo, JR Tokyo, JR Shinjuku, JR Shibuya, JR Yokohama, Sakura-doori Line Nagoya, Kintetsu Osaka Namba, and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin). The posters consist of various illustrations that differ at each station. Kuroko’s Basketball and Ansatsu Kyōshitsu have also taken over Weekly Shonen Jump’s official site and can be seen when the site loads.

Kuroko’s Basketball is written by Tadatoshi Fujimaki, and it has been running in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2009. Twenty-four volumes have been released so far. It is a bestseller with the total number of copies printed exceeding 23 million. The story follows Tetsuya Kuroko, an extremely laid-back high school student with hidden talents, and his teammates aiming for the national basketball tournament. The TV anime that began airing on April 9, 2012 has also caught attention, and the second season will start broadcasting this month.

Ansatsu Kyōshitsu started its serialization in the 31st issue of Weekly Shonen Jump in 2012 (sold from July 2, 2012). Although Yuusei Matsui’s manga has only been serialized for a short time, reaching only six volumes, it already has more than 6.1 million copies in print. In merely a little more than one year, it succeeded in reaching 1 million first edition copies sold. It is a distinctive educational comedy manga that follows the everyday lives of class 3-E, a group of dropout students and their homeroom teacher, the mysterious creature Korosensei, at Kunugigaoka Junior High Preparatory School.
