The original work for Beyond the Boundary is a light novel series by author Nagomu Torii that received an honorable mention at the 2nd Kyoto Animation Award. The series is published by KyoAni’s light novel label KA Esuma Bunko. Two volumes have been released so far. Beyond the Boundary joins the ranks of two other works that went on to become anime after winning a Kyoto Animation Award: Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions and Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club.

Directing the anime is Taichi Ishidate who has worked as an animator and storyboard artist on such anime as Lucky Star and Nichijou.
