Giant Domo-kun Joins Sebastian Masuda’s Project, Time After Time Capsule!

Each year America’s capital, Washington DC, hosts the National Cherry Blossom Festival to honor the coming of Spring and the friendship between the United States and Japan. The festivities occur over a four-week period and include various events that celebrate Japanese culture and the blooming of the cherry blossoms. April 16th marked the grand finale of the festival this year and finished off the excitement with Sakura Matsuri, a street festival enriched with Japanese culture. This year Sebastian Masuda, artist and founder of 6%DOKIDOKI, attended the event featuring the newest installment of his project, Time After Time Capsule.

Time After Time Capsule is an ongoing art piece of Masuda’s that explores the relationship between Kawaii Culture and community and the possible effect they may have on the world. The project consists of a series of time capsules which intend to travel to cities all over the globe looking for different participants. Visitors are encouraged to come and put their bright, happy memories into the capsules which will bring color to the semi-transparent statues over time.

Masuda believes that “kawaii is what you make of it.” It’s a personal experience which is open to everyone's unique interpretation. One of the project's goal is to bring together people’s own creative visions in hope that one day kawaii can create change within our community and possibly the world.

The newest Time Capsule Masuda created is in the shape of the popular Japanese character Domo-kun and made its debut in DC during the Cherry Blossom Festival. He plans to tour with Domo in hope that people from all over will be able to participate by including their own memories and dreams for the future in the capsule.

During the festival in DC, lovers of kawaii traveled from all over to view Sebastian Masuda’s newest work and become involved in the project. Masuda even hosted a workshop during the event where people could either create a kawaii object or write a letter to their future self to place in the capsule.

A lot of people who attended the event also wore colorful street fashions and many were fans of 6%DOKIDOKI!
When Domo-kun finishes touring different cities, Masuda will move on and create new time capsules to add to the project. He plans on bringing together all of the time capsules during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 to share the happy memories of the participants with the world.

“Let’s share our colorful futures together!”
