In This Corner of the World is anything but marginal in the Japanese movie world. As of Feb. 11, over 1.5 million tickets have been sold, totalling over 2 billion yen in box office takings with the movie currently ranking eighth after spending a continuous 14 weeks on the box office charts.
Along with its box office success which has seen it rapidly roll out to even more screens across Japan, In This Corner of the World has also been picking up awards left, right, and center. The impressive total of 17 so far includes the three from the Mainichi Film Awards announced on Feb. 13 including Best Film, the Noburo Ofuji Award for animation, and the Best Music Award. Director Katabuchi Sunao, actress Non, and musician Kotringo are all expected to be present at the Feb. 15 ceremony to collect the award, where Kotringo is also expected to open the proceedings with her cover of “Kanashikute Yarikirenai.”
The movie isn’t staying “in this corner of the world” either - it’s currently been sold to 23 territories worldwide. Katabuchi Sunao and Non will shortly be heading to Mexico for the film’s premiere on Feb. 22 with hopefully more stops on the tour to follow!
