Mauhouse Setagaya is opening options for people who want to live with their cats in Setagaya, Tokyo! People will be able to rent Room A or Room B, or live in the detached Wee Home #37! Open houses started on June 29.

According to a 2015 investigation by Japan Pet Food Association, there are 9,874,000 cats and 9,917,000 dogs owned in Japan. That’s a difference of 2 million pets compared to a survey 5 years earlier, but only a small one compared to 2016. Compared to 2015, the rate of people with cats has increased by 0.4%, and that number is expected to increase more. Despite that, the number of leasing options which permit cat owners has decreased due to fear of them clawing wallpaper or marking and staining the rooms. Mauhouse Setagaya was born in response to the voices of cat owners and those who want to own cats, aiming to create enjoyable living situations for cats and their humans.

Rooms A and B are rented out with the aim of letting tenants live comfortably with their cat. Their spacious design is large enough for a maximum of two people and three cats. These are maisonette-style, so cats can get plenty of exercise indoors. They have special wallpaper that helps prevent cats from damaging it as well. They also have padded floors, that are replaced when each tenant moves out, so you don’t have to worry about any damage done by your pet!
There are even specially shaped poles in the wall which you can use to set up cat steps! You can customize them however you like, including different-colored cloth, setting up a hammock for cat naps, or even using transparent acrylic or glass for the steps so you can enjoy seeing their cute paws and tummies from below!~ There’s also a specially installed cat door which leads out to the deck. A lattice enclosure up to the third floor will prevent them from escaping, so you and your cat can enjoy the outdoors worry-free.

Wee Home #37 is a three-story building completed in 2004 with a built-in garage. With how beautiful and open the space is, it’s hard to believe that it’s 11 years old. The first floor includes a garage, bedroom, and walk-in closet. The second floor features the deck and airy living room. Finally, the third floor has the bathroom which even has a jacuzzi, and you’ll also find a loft. The deck is enclosed with a lattice, so you can let your cat bask in the sun and play around without worrying about them escaping. The third floor deck features an atrium and an incredible view, and will probably be your cat’s favorite spot in the house! The steps also guarantee them plenty of exercise. There’s a kousa dogwood growing in the spacious deck which will allow you to experience the seasons as you watch the leaves fall and sun shine into the winter, enjoy the shade in the summer, and take in the autumn colors in the fall.

Denso Sugiura of Arts & Crafts Architectural Design Associates, Chayahara, and Yasui were chosen to design Mauhouse Setagaya. Denso Sugiura is known as the master of small homes for using the principal design rules of visibility, openness, and functionality to make pleasant and enjoyable spaces. He has worked on more than 130 buildings and has called it a Wee Home instead of small house.

Mauhouse Setagaya was chosen for its proximity to nearby trimmers, animal sitters, and a veterinary hospital. From its design to its completion, it took two to three times as long as a normal home, and even the materials were carefully selected. As a result, you can have confidence in its construction and design as a wonderful home for both you and your pets.
