Bonobono has been confirmed to be getting a new TV anime adaptation in 2016, a year that will mark its 30th anniversary since beginning serialization. The anime will air at 4:52 a.m. every Saturday on Fuji TV. It will also be available to stream on Fuij TV on Demand (FOD).
Bonobono is based on a manga by Mikio Igarashi currently serialized in Takeshobo’s Manga Club and Manga Life. The series gained popularity for its absurd gags involving cute characters including the sea otter pup Bonobono along with Chipmunk-kun, Raccoon-kun, and others. Forty volumes were published for the best-selling series that has over 9 million copies in print. A film adaptation of the series was released in 1993, and a TV anime was broadcast between ‘95 and ‘96. In 2002 the fully CG movie Bonobono: Kumomo no Ki no Koto was released.
Handling production of the new TV anime is Eiken, the studio behind Sazae-san and Oyako Club. It will air during the time slot of the currently airing mini program Tetsujin 28-go Gao!.
Cast and staff information is still to be revealed. A different voice cast has been in charge of the Bonobono movies, TV anime, and games to date. Will the cast this time yet again be completely new, or will there be members from past installments?
Next year, 2016, is also the 30th anniversary year for the series since it began serialization. Since this is a series with such highly popular characters, it seems we can look forward to not only the TV anime but also merchandising too. Make sure not to miss any of the latest news to come.
