Gold Gushes Forth in Trailer to “One Piece Film Gold”

One Piece Film Gold will be released throughout Japan on July 23, 2016. Since 2012, the One Piece films have gained attention in part due to series creator Eiichiro Oda executive producing them.

The first trailer to the movie was posted on Dec. 15. In it molten gold is shown flowing around rocks in the shape of the movie’s title. Its highlight is this stream of surging gold. In the second half of the video, staff names are shown, and at the end letters spelling out “Gold” appear. Luffy’s face reflected in the gold lettering is an impressive touch as well. The video ends with the release date and the suggestive catchphrase “To a ‘new dimension’ of a ‘new world.’”

Many times in trailers and previews for anime attention is placed on the characters. However, this trailer dares to highlight only gold, without even showing the characters. Defiantly bucking the trend, it gives plenty to raise anticipation for the movie.

One Piece is a popular manga by Eiichiro Oda serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997. The series has over 320 million copies in print worldwide, gaining it the Guinness World Record for “Most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.” The film series began in 2000 and is up to its 13th film with Gold. Eiichiro Oda has been heavily involved with three of them: 2009’s One Piece Film Strong World, 2012’s One Piece Film Z, and now Gold. Both Strong World and Film Z were blockbuster hits as well, raking in 4.8 billion yen and 6.87 billion yen, respectively, in box office revenue.

Gold is the first film in the series in four years. Directing the film is Hiroaki Miyamoto, the third chief director of the TV series. Penning the script is Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who was also the scriptwriter on such drama and movies as Liar Game and Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de. And series creator Eiichiro Oda is executive producing.

In other news, advance ticket sales will begin at theatres on Dec. 18. While supplies last, they will come with a clear file of “Kintaro Luffy” drawn exclusively for the occasion by Oda. The file is gold and shows Kintaro Luffy carrying a broadaxe. Second and third round bonus items are also planned, and details will be revealed on these soon. Tickets cost 1,400 yen for adults and 800 yen for kids, and a pair will also be sold for 2,100 yen.
