The broadcast premiere date for the TV anime Joker Game, based on a mystery novel by Koji Yanagi, has been confirmed for April 2016. Along with this, news on the anime’s staff was revealed along with a key visual by character designer Toshiyuki Yahagi.

The original novel is a spy mystery published by Kadokawa Shoten since 2008. It’s a tension-filled spy thriller focusing on the spies of the “D Agency,” a school for training spies founded by Lieutenant Colonel Yuki of the Imperial Japanese Army. The novel ranked second in 2008’s “Kono Mystery ga Sugoi!” ranking and won the 62nd Mystery Writers of Japan Award. A live-action adaptation of the series starring Kazuya Kamenashi was also released in January 2015.

The anime’s staff have been revealed. In charge of production is Production I.G, and directing is Kazuya Nomura from Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie. Taku Kishimoto of Silver Spoon and Haikyu!! fame is the series composer, and Toshiyuki Yahagi is the character designer and chief animation director. Furthermore, the music is being created by Kenji Kawai who has worked on countless popular anime including Mobile Police Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell.

Joker Game is set on the eve of World War II. In 1937, a school for training spies called “D Agency” is founded in absolute secrecy by Lieutenant Colonel Yuki of the Imperial Japanese Army. Contrary to the trend of valuing native-born soldiers, chosen to attend the school are young graduates from public university who pass a superhuman selection test with flying colors. There, under the guidance of Lieutenant Colonel Yuki, who possesses outstanding ingenuity, the boys are trained in highly skilled spy techniques before being sent on assignment.

“Don’t die, don’t kill” - for the spies of D Agency who hold stealth as a central pillar, suicide and killing are the worst possible choices. They deceive allies, outwit enemies, and sneak around the globe in the face of extreme opposition from inside the army…
