Theatrical Anime “Garo: Divine Flame” Slated for Spring 2016 Release; Set 4 Years After “Honoo no Kokuin”

Since the tokusatsu TV program Garo in 2005, the Garo series has expanded into additional TV series, spin-offs, movies, original videos, and TV anime, and the first theatrical movie in the series is finally on the way as well. An event celebrating the series’ 10th anniversary titled Kinrou Kanshasai 2015 was held on Nov. 23, and it was here that the movie’s spring 2016 release was announced.

The movie will be a sequel to the series’ first anime, Garo: Honoo no Kokuin, broadcast in 2014, and takes place four years after its events. It will be comprised of a new story for Leon and the gang, and its dark fantasy world themed after the witch hunts in Europe in the Middle Ages will captivate fans all over again.

Reprising their roles on the movie are directors Keita Amemiya, a familiar face from the series, and Yuichiro Hayashi, and Yasuko Kobayashi is once again penning the script. Mappa is also continuing from the TV series Garo: Honoo no Kokuin and Garo: Guren no Tsuki to produce the movie’s animation. We can expect the same level of visuals and production values seen in Rage of Bahamut: Genesis and Terror in Resonance.

It has also been revealed that Daisuke Namikawa will be reprising his role of Leon in the movie. With the story being entirely new, there may be new characters who appear, but we’ll have to wait for more information to come.

The Garo series is a tokusatsu hero drama created by Keita Amemiya. The drama is aimed at adults, and its characteristic visual beauty is the secret to its popularity. To date there have been five TV series, five movies, a special drama, and loads of other related works created including spin-offs. Its world has also widened from it being the definitive tokusatsu series of the 2000s. The upcoming animated movie is being made in celebration of the 10th anniversary since the broadcast of Garo began in 2005. 2016 will also be packed out with Garo in the form of a new TV series and events as well.
