Bootleg “One Piece” Posted Ahead of Release Date; Four People Arrested

Kyoto police have arrested four people charged with violating the Japanese Copyright Act for posting without permission the latest chapter of the hugely popular manga One Piece currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump four days ahead of its release.

The suspects were apprehended for illegally releasing the latest chapter of the series, published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on shelves Nov. 2, on a bootleg site. The site has over 4,000 manga translated into English, the largest library of any manga bootleg site. With the high popularity of Japanese manga worldwide, sites that post bootleg versions have become a problem in recent years, and this is the first such overseas bootleg site to be exposed.

The suspects are said to have worked for a delivery company where they would intercept magazines sent from the printers, take out the manga, and send it to a friend in China. The manga were then translated into English and posted to the site.

Regarding the incident, an official comment has been released by Shueisha, the publisher of Weekly Shonen Jump.
