Venture Project Developed at University of Tokyo; Game Controller that Uses Haptic Feedback

Haptic feedback game controller UnlimitedHand

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the haptic feedback game controller UnlimitedHand was announced on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Just by wrapping it around your arm, UnlimitedHand allows players to feel as if they’re intuitively controlling and interacting with the game world.

UnlimitedHand was created by the venture project H2L of the University of Tokyo. Pre-orders are currently being taken on the official site’s campaign page, and units will be shipped in March 2016. The price ranges from $188 to $248 (approx. 22,700 yen to 29,900 yen).

A New Type of Controller that Controls Games through Finger Movements

The UnlimitedHand device straps to your arm and is equipped with a motion sensor and muscle sensor, and through these the user’s hand movements are input into the game, and along with electric stimulators and vibration is able to contract the muscles of the hand, giving users a pseudo feeling of touch.

Differing from the existing button-type controllers, the user’s finger movement translates to the character in game, and they can feel the character, the recoil from guns, and more, giving the user a personal experience through intuitive controls.

In addition to the UnlimitedHand being on show from Sept. 17–20 at the world’s largest international game convention, Tokyo Game Show 2015, it was also unveiled at “TechCrunch SF, Startup Battlefield” held in San Francisco, U.S. for two days on Sept. 22 and 23.

Along with offering UnlimitedHand to game companies, developers, and general gamers, their aim is to coordinate it for upcoming VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) games as well.
