One Piece is a widely loved anime that even now is a representative of the genre in Japan. The newest news on the series was revealed on Aug. 22. Production on the series’ long-awaited theatrical film was announced.
On the night of Aug. 22, the broadcast of a special program titled One Piece: Episode of Sabo: Brotherly Bonds - A Miraculous Reunion and an Inherited Determination on Fuji TV networks
had fans simmering. At the end of the program, “One Piece Film 2016 Summer” was shown on the screen. This was the first announcement of production on the newest theatrical film in the series.
Though production and a tentative release were announced, not much is yet known about the film. The contents of the film, its staff and cast, of course, and whether or not the simple title “One Piece Film 2016” is the official title or not are all unknown at this time. Well have to wait for more information to come.
It seems the first new information on the film will be published in the latest issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on sale Aug. 31. With comments from original creator Eiichiro Oda regarding the new film, it will be a must read.
The national treasure One Piece began serialization in 1997, and this year marks its 17th year. In total, 78 volumes of the tankobon manga have been published to date, and the series has over 320 million copies in print. It was even awarded the Guinness World Record for “most copies published of a comic book series by a single author.” Records set by the series’ animated films are also just as impressive. The huge hits One Piece Film: Strong World released on Dec. 12, 2009 brought in a box office total of 4.8 billion yen and One Piece Film: Z released on Dec. 15, 2012 had earnings of over 6.8 billion yen.
Work on One Piece Film 2016 is beginning two years since the series’ biggest hit, and will be released in summer 2016, making it the first new film in the series in three years. Just what will this 13th film in the series since March 2000’s One Piece be like? There is no doubt that many fans will be waiting impatiently for this one.
