World First! Battle in the Digital World - “IC Carddass Dragon Ball” Releases Sept. 19

Toymaker Bandai will release on Sept. 19 the trading card game (TCG) IC Carddass Dragon Ball. The game is the world’s first TCG that has a near field communication (NFC) chip in every card, and it’s gaining massive attention ahead of its release due to players being able to have battles digitally as well.

Cards in IC Carddass Dragon Ball each have an IC chip embedded in them that meets the international NFC standard. With this, players can enjoy online battles without any opponent being physically present.

Cards can be scanned using a smartphone installed with the game’s exclusive free app or using a computer with an attached IC card reader. By scanning the cards their information can be stored in a digital deck allowing players to enjoy online battles.

The greatest advantage of having the option of digital battles is being able to play without having to set up a time and place or choose an opponent. Though Dragon Ball TCGs to date have been targeted toward elementary school students, because the convenience has increased due to digital battles becoming an option, the target demographic has widened to also include middle school students who are busy with clubs and other activities. The lineup of cards is also linked to the newest TV anime, Dragon Ball Super, and features new characters including Super Saiyan God Goku and the God of Destruction Beerus. In addition to main characters Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo, popular friends and foes from previous installments in the Dragon Ball series are included as well. It seems this TGC may gain popularity from long-time Dragon Ball fans too.

The first volume of IC Carddass Dragon Ball includes starter sets that come with an IC card reader for 3,240 yen, regular starter sets for 1,620 yen, booster packs for 216 yen, and vending machine booster packs for 200 yen (all prices include tax). A portion of the cards will differ between the regular booster packs and vending machine booster packs.
