Release Date Confirmed for Patlabor Movie with Additional Footage Added!

The Next Generation: Patlabor - Shuto Kessen Director’s Cut to be released on Oct. 10; new poster also released

A director’s cut version of the movie The Next Generation: Patlabor - Shuto Kessen which includes newly added scenes will be released Japan-wide on Oct. 10. This time, a poster visual has been released. Due to director Mamoru Oshii’s tough demands, each cut from this version of the movie was edited under full supervision by Oshii.

The Next Generation: Patlabor - Shuto Kessen Director’s Cut will be 119 minutes long, 27 minutes longer than the original movie. Additional scenes revealed at this time include a mystery surrounding combat helicopter pilot Rei Haibara, whose true colors are still to be seen, and a scene with Special Vehicle Division 2 caught in a battle with life and death hanging in the balance. It seems in this version the characters have even more depth and director Oshii’s style is more vivid than ever.

The new poster released this time shows Rei Haibara smiling fearlessly inside the cockpit of her combat chopper. The other highlight is an Ingram, a constant mainstay of the series, being reflected on her helmet.

Regarding Rei Haibara, director Oshii said, “This time I created with the utmost attention to detail a character who symbolizes the modern age.” The mysterious poster also leaves an impression with the phrase “Who the hell are you?!”

“This special dense edition is packed with topics that must be told,” said Oshii, displaying his confidence in the director’s cut. Just what kind of messages did he include in this edition of the movie?

The Next Generation: Patlabor is a live-action project for the popular anime and mixed media series Mobile Police Patlabor. All seven chapters of the series were screened in theaters beginning April 2014, and the full-length movie The Next Generation: Patlabor - Shuto Kessen was released in theaters this May.
