The Unique Romantic Comedy Manga “My Love Story!!” Live-Action Adaptation to Open Oct. 31

My Love Story!!, which smashed the image of the hero in shoujo manga, is to get a live-action adaptation. The film will be released throughout Japan on Oct. 31. This live-action film will follow on from the anime series which began in April 2015. Suzuki Ryohei will play the 2-meter-tall, 120-kilograms protagonist, Takeo Goda. Suzuki is best known for portraying unique characters in such films as HK Kamen Rider and Tokyo Tribe. The actor put on around 30 kilograms in order to achieve an appropriate look for the role of Takeo.

My Love Story!! was serialized in Bessatsu Margaret (Shueisha). With its combination of a stern hero and heroine, it garnered an unprecedented reaction from readers. The series is now on its eighth volume, and sales have exceeded 3.5 million copies. In 2013 the series placed first in the women’s category of the “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” (This Manga is Amazing!) ranking, and in the same year won a Kodansha Manga Award in the shoujo category. With such critical acclaim, it can certainly be said that this adaptation is long-awaited indeed.

Playing the role of the girl who enters into Takeo’s affections, Rinko Yamato, is actress Mei Nagano. Known for her modeling work in Nicola, she is a new face who has also appeared in the films Rurouni Kenshin and Tsukuroi Tatsu Hito.

Furthermore, Kentaro Sakaguchi has been selected for the role of Makoto Sunakawa, Takeo’s friend. In contrast to Takeo, his is a far cooler role. Sakaguchi is known for his appearances as a model in Men’s Non-No magazine, as well as in the much-discussed works Otoko no Issho and Umimachi Diary. Such a sweet mask is perfect for the role of Makoto Sunagawa.

The director of the film is Hayato Kawai. He was the recipient of the Galaxy Award in 2011 for his work on the drama Suzuki Sensei, and has gained much attention. Filming began on May 20, with release slated for October. It’s certainly the case that for a film to become a big hit, it must be successful with fans and non-fans alike. It seems this pure-hearted story of young love arriving this autumn will be a talking point!
