Enormous Gundam Exhibit is Finally Coming to Tokyo!

Large scale Mobile Suit Gundam exhibit coming this summer to Roppongi; advance tickets with Gunpla set go on sale

A Gundam will be erected in Roppongi, Tokyo on July 18. “Mobile Suit Gundam Exhibition: The Art of Gundam” will be held from July 18 to Sept. 27 at the Mori Arts Center Gallery. The exhibit will focus on the first Gundam series Mobile Suit Gundam, which began its TV broadcast in 1979 and continues to this day, a whopping 36 years later. Approximately 1,000 valuable production items will be on display. The exhibit will be an unprecedented Gundam exhibit that continues from the exhibit held in 2014 at the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan.

The 1,000 production items on display will include project phases and memos by Yoshiyuki Tomino, who is called the father of the Gundam franchise, as well as various other materials including artboards, layouts, key animations, setting art, and more from staff members Mitsuki Nakamura, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and Kunio Okawara. It seems the many materials that shocked attendees of the Osaka exhibit will be on display here as well. Special screenings of a new video will also be held in the exhibit’s theater area. This will be set on the White Base and viewers will experience along with Captain Bright and the rest of the crew a battle that unfolds in the sky.

Projects exclusive to the Tokyo exhibit are also in the works. One is a screening of “All G Tribute Chronicle Ver. 2” done in projection mapping. This will include digest versions of roughly 40 works starting from the beginning of the series. Likely to also be a highlight, there will be 1,000 Gunpla on display as well. Also on display will be production materials from the newest work in the franchise to begin this summer, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. This as well will be exclusive to 2015.

Advance tickets to the exhibit went on sale April 9. These include Gunpla set tickets that come with a premium Gunpla. The set includes a ticket to the Gundam exhibit and an exhibit-exclusive “RG RX-78-2 Gundam Clear Color Ver.” Gunpla and costs 4,500 yen (tax included, shipping and handling separate). This is good news for both fans who want to lock in their tickets early and for those who want to get their hands on a rare Gunpla.
