The manga series Monster Musume will be made into an anime to begin broadcast in July 2015. An official website and Twitter account have been set up, and further information will be released as the summer airing approaches.
Monster Musume has been serialized by Okayado in Monthly Comic Ryu (Tokuma Shoten) since 2012. The series has been a huge success, with the total number of special volumes printed exceeding 1.5 million.
The series is set in a Japan that recognizes exchange between non-human species. The story takes place in the home of the protagonist Kimihito Kurusu, and details his life cohabiting with a rolling series of highly idiosyncratic monster girls, including Mia the lamia, who has the lower body of a snake; Papi the harpy, with the wings and feet of a bird; and Centorea the centaur, who has the lower body of a horse.
The brief glimpses into the characters’ daily lives, such as the monster girls’ expressions and gestures or the occasional act of outlandish behavior, is highly charming. A particular highlight is how the relationships develop with the protagonist. One can expect a unique depiction that somewhat differs from ordinary anime.
Key visuals have already been made public on the official site, and the cute monster girls are on display. In addition, on Twitter a joint campaign between the anime and manga accounts is underway, and special Monster Musume T-shirts (normally not for sale) can be won in a draw. We will certainly be paying attention to all the latest news about the staff and cast, which will become clear as time goes on.
Furthermore, it has been decided that the series will be displayed for two days on March 21 and 22 at AnimeJapan 2015, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight. That is to say, the Monster Musume girls will be making an appearance at the Toho Animation booth! What kind of project is planned to stir up the excited fans? We will be keeping our eye on this one!
