Cygames announces the launch of its anime division; original anime project also underway

Cygames, a company that develops such games as Rage of Bahamut and Granblue Fantasy, has announced the launch of a new anime division. The purpose of this new division is to strengthen the anime industry. The company will handle anime production and licensing.

Cygames has a countless number of popular games to work with and the company says their aim is not just anime adaptations of their current content, but also starting up original anime projects. The official site also says, “We are entering the world of animation with a certain sense of purpose to take on the current animation industry, as a game developer.” It seems they are also going for an anime business different than those before it.

Already, Cygames’ anime division has made waves. In fall 2014, the company created, through its own financing, a TV anime adaptation of its most popular game, Rage of Bahamut. This was created by a talented group of staff including director Keiichi Sato who is well known for his work on Tiger & Bunny. The anime generated huge buzz from both anime fans and industry officials for its high level of perfection and became a huge hit. The company now aims to expand on this experience even more.

Along with the launch of their anime division, the company has also begun recruiting talent from related fields. They are currently recruiting for anime producer, production assistant, and IP management.

This gives a peek into the fact that they are stressing the use of IPs (intellectual property rights) together with investments in anime projects. Up until now, there have been many works meant for anime fans constructed with a primary focus on the video software business. However, Cygames decided to use a business model not reliant on video software for the aforementioned Rage of Bahamut. What kind of anime business will Cygames, which boasts the motto “Aiming to become an animation brand that exemplifies Japan,” create? This is likely to become a topic of huge interest.
