The main staff and supporting cast of the anime Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju have been revealed. The announcement builds momentum towards a new OAD and a TV series.
In charge of production will be Studio Deen, who have worked on such series as Higurashi When They Cry and Hakuoki. The director will be Mamoru Hatakeyama, series composition will be undertaken by Jun Kumagai, and Mieko Hosoi will be in charge of character design.
Furthermore, as the story is set in the world of rakugo in the Showa era, the professional rakugo storyteller Shinpei Hayashiya has been brought on board to act as a supervisor. Hayashiya will also play the role of Master Nekosuke, and will support the production in these two capacities.
The cast includes Koichi Yamadera, who will play Sukeroku, known as a genius without match; Megumi Hayashibara in the role of Miyokichi, a mysterious former geisha with a deep relationship to Sukeroku and the Yakumo; Hiroshi Yanaka, who will play the Seventh Generation Yakumo Yurakutei, in between Sukeroku’s master and the Eighth Generation; and Kappei Yamaguchi as Amaken, a rakugo critic and passionate fan of the Eighth Generation Yakumo. The line-up is strong, consisting of talented, veteran actors, and one can feel the enthusiasm for the project.
In addition, Akira Ishida, who will play the Eight Generation Yakumo Yurakutei, will also play the young Yakumo, Hiko Kiku. Expectations are also high for talks with Yuu Kobayashi for the role of Konatsu, and Tomokazu Seki in the role of Yotaro, which was announced previously.
A preview of the anime has been released on the official website and in the 24th issue of Itan magazine (Kodansha). Check them out for a first taste of the series’ atmosphere.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju Volume 7 special edition along with the new OAD Yotaro Ronin Vol. 1 will be released on March 6. On Aug. 7, Volume 8 and Yotaro Ronin Vol. 2 will be released. Keep your eyes peeled for forthcoming information about broadcast dates!
