‘Sore ga Seiyu!’ TV Anime Confirmed - The Popular Doujin Work by Masumi Asano x Kenjiro Hata is Getting a Major Break

An anime adaptation has been confirmed for Sore ga Seiyu!, a tag team effort between an active voice actress and a popular manga artist. The broadcast will begin this summer. The original work was written by Masumi Asano under the pen name Asano Masumi, and illustrated by Kenjiro Hata, who is well-known from Hayate the Combat Butler and other popular manga.

The series depicts the struggles of three new seiyu (voice actor) along with their offstage, everyday lives, and it seems to be gathering support from anime, seiyu, and manga fans. A teaser site opened on Jan. 14, and announcements for the anime have begun.

On the other hand, this anime adaptation is likely a surprise to many. The truth is that Sore ga Seiyu! isn’t a regular commercial publication. It is sold as an original doujinshi made by a tag team of two pros. After it started in 2011, it became hugely popular at doujinshi events and the like, with the booth having a neverending line. It is becoming more common for series and authors to become popular from doujinshi. Nevertheless, it seems Sore ga Seiyu! will make headlines for overcoming the obstacle of being outside the realm of commercial manga and still getting an anime adaptation so quickly.

The anime adaptation was announced in advance during Comic Market 87, held from Dec. 28-30, 2014, in the doujinshi Sore ga Seiyu! 2014 Winter Ase to Live to Ho-chan to and at Masumi Asano’s and Kenjiro Hata’s joint booth. At the same time the teaser site opened, wide-scale advertisements also began.

Also, it was revealed that Gonzo is producing the animation and Evil Line Records is working on the music. We’ll have to wait for a follow-up report for information on the staff and cast.

Masumi Asano is an active seiyu whose roles include Minami Kaido (Cure Mermaid) in Go! Princess PreCure. The series depicts the everyday life of a seiyu based on her personal experience. Another popular point is that currently active seiyu appear in the series as themselves.

Kenjiro Hata is a popular artist whose works, which include Hayate the Combat Butler, are routinely adapted into anime. He is now challenging himself with Sore ga Seiyu! which is released as a doujinshi.
