A Look at TV Anime ‘The Heroic Legend of Arslan’ - Broadcast to Begin in April 2015 on MBS/TBS Sundays at 17:00

The adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan into a TV anime series was huge news when it was announced in November 2014. In a commercial during the broadcast of The Seven Deadly Sins, which began its broadcast run on Jan. 4 at 17:00 on all 28 MBS/TBS networks in Japan, it was announced that the anime The Heroic Legend of Arslan will be coming to the same time slot starting in April. Among anime fans, this time slot is known fondly as “Nichi-5.” Because Sunday evening is considered prime time, many big-budget programs are aired during this time. Previous hit works to broadcast during this time slot include Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Fullmetal Alchemist, Haikyu!!, and Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

Indeed, The Heroic Legend of Arslan is a long-anticipated work appropriately called a large-scale epic. The original work, created by Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, is a manga version of a fantasy battlefield masterpiece by Yoshiki Tanaka who is well known from Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Soyuden. It’s serialization began in 2013 in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine (Kodansha), and this too gathered attention as a major work. Two volumes of the original comic have already been published and the series has already exceeded 1 million copies in print. Sales will likely rise even more when the TV anime starts.

In addition, on Jan. 4 a key visual was released and a portion of the staff including the director was announced. The key visual shows Arslan, a timid crown prince who follows a harsh fate, and Daryun, a knight who protects him. On the staff side, taking the helm as director is Noriyuki Abe from Bleach and Black Butler: Book of Circus, and the series composer is Makoto Uezu, a hitmaker who has worked on Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ars Nova, Akame ga Kill!, and others. The character designer is Shingo Ogiso. The staff lineup is plenty to raise anticipation.

The story of The Heroic Legend of Arslan begins in the Royal Capital of Ecbatana in the kingdom of Pars, which lies in the center of a major land route from east to west. However, the kingdom is overthrown by the heretical kingdom of Lusitania. The timid crown prince Arslan, along with Daryun who is called a “knight of knights,” stands up to face a cruel fate. Set on a continent where deceit swirls in the very air, the story depicts day after day of fighting. And, within it, a young Arslan greatly matures.
