Yoshiyuki Tomino’s first Gundam TV series in 15 years, Gundam Reconguista in G is sparking discussions all over. It was first screened at an event in August, started its television broadcast in October, and at the end of the year, Episode 14 has aired, signaling the crossing of its halfway point.
To review the happenings of the first half of the series, a “Gundam Reconguista in G Special Screening Event” was held at Shinjuku Piccadilly, Tokyo. For this day, they picked five episodes from the first half, and with the addition of Episode 15, “Tobe! Towasanga e (Fly! To Towasanga),” which is scheduled to air on New Year’s, a total of six episodes were screened.
What really lighted up the event was the decorated guests. Even chief director Yoshiyuki Tomino, who was so busy he said, “I haven’t finished work yet,” and, “I really don’t have the time to be here,” made it to the theater, accompanied by Mark Ishii (protagonist Bellri Zenam), Yu Shimamura (Aida), Takuya Sato, and Ryota Ohsaka (Klim) from the cast.
The cast reviewed the story until the present point under the MC of producer Naohiro Ogata, giving ground to a new discussion. Ishii commented, “Each episode is fun,” while Shimamura revealed her bewilderment when she said, “All the episodes are confusing.” “Every week, new characters appear in the show” - Sato added, explaining the atmosphere present. Ohsaka looked very eager as he said, “This is my first time portraying a confident character. It’s challenging.” All of them showed the happiness they felt playing in a Gundam piece.
However, chief director Tomino ended the delighted discussion with a bomb. When he said that based on today’s talk, the characters might be treated differently, the staff was taken aback with surprise. According to chief director Tomino, he only completed the storyboards to Episode 25 the day before. Not only that, he said that the storyboards and the scenario change everything from before. Producer and present MC Ogata’s statement was just as unexpected: “The storyboard of the last episode (Ep. 26) will be ready by the new year, the rest is up to his mood.” This is connected to Tomino’s statement that the characters might be treated in a different way.
The discussion continued, often scraping spoilers, such as “I’m a bit concerned about Mask’s involvement in Episode 25,” “Aida has a really good scene of two seconds,” and “What should we do with Klim?”, but that just made it all the more exquisite, further arousing expectations toward the later developments of the show. It was a showcase of appealing Gundam lines.
At the end of the discussion, the guests all expressed their thanks to the fans and cheered them on further. After that, all 500 visitors put on masks just like the one Captain Mask wears, and mingled with the guests for a photo session. The atmosphere became very heated at the sight of 500 Masks flooding the theater.
The evening foreshadows that Gundam Reconguista in G will take flight with even more impetus thanks to the enthusiastic support of the fans.
