Former Anime Short Death Parade to Become TV Anime Series in 2015

Nihon TV has announced that they will broadcast a new original anime series in 2015. The title of the series is Death Parade. It will be scripted and directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa with Madhouse in charge of animation.

The truth is, there was a prototype to this new series: the 2013 short Death Billiards produced through Anime Mirai, a project run by the Agency for Cultural Affairs to support young talented animators. The new TV anime adaptation has been given the title Death Parade.

Death Billiards was a 20-some-minute short, about the same length as a 30-minute anime slot, that told the mysterious story of life in the afterlife. It was directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa and animated by Madhouse. Though Anime Mirai’s goal is meant to support the growth of young animators, the series became widely recognized for not only it’s visual quality but also its highly entertaining story.

This favorable reception has earned it a commercial anime adaptation. Anime Mirai has been producing four shorts per year since 2010, but this marks the first time that a work has been adapted into a TV anime series.

Director Yuzuru Tachikawa was born in 1981, and after joining Madhouse he worked on series like Kiba, Bleach, and The Mystical Archives of Dantalian. In recent years, he’s worked as an assistant director for Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, and Terror in Resonance. His directorial debut with this series is sure to draw a lot of attention.

To commemorate the new anime series, the original Death Billiards short will be broadcast on Nico Nico Live on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 11:30 p.m. (JST).
