After producing hit novels like the Monogatari series and Katana series, author NisiOisiN is taking on a new challenge. NisiOisiN will write nine completely new short stories, each of which will be drawn as manga by different manga artists.
This special project is called Ogiri, and begins on Nov. 1. The manga will appear in four Shueisha manga magazines: Weekly Shonen Jump, Jump Square, Weekly Young Jump and Bessatsu Margaret. It’s a big project that cuts across different popular magazines.
Here is the concept behind the project. The editors of each magazine present NisiOisiN with a theme. NisiOisiN builds upon that theme and comes up with a short one-off script.
These nine stories are turned into manga by different manga artists. The four magazines the manga will appear in, which include a shonen magazine, a shoujo magazine and a young adult magazine, are all popular magazines with unique characteristics. Each one also has a different personality. With that in mind, the attention will be on the scripts Mr. Nisio has provided.
Furthermore, the line-up of manga artists participating in the project is, in a word, remarkable. Released on Nov. 1 in the 49th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, the first manga, Musume-Iri-Bako, took on a cardboard box theme and involved Akira Akatsuki, who also teamed up with NisiOisiN for Medaka Box.
Following that will be RKD-EK9 (*Jump Square*, December issue), drawn by Takeshi Obata, and Nani Made Nara Koroseru? (*Jump Square*, December issue), drawn by Akihisa Ikeda. The line-up has already been announced, with Teppei Fukushima, Aiji Yamakawa, Atsushi Nakayama, Hikaru Nakamura, Mizuki Kawashita and Renjuro Kindaichi joining from December onwards. The project looks to be one that will highlight the breadth of NisiOisiN’s talent.
