The two Rurouni Kenshin movies released this year are dominating the movie industry in Japan and still continue to break huge records. Since its release in theaters on Aug. 1 until Oct. 16, a period of 76 days, Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno has broken through 4 million tickets sold. Furthermore, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, which released on Sept. 13, broke through 3 million tickets sold on Oct. 14. As of Oct. 15, audiences to see Kyoto Inferno total 4,011,497 people, with a box office earning of 5,180,733,800 JPY. Audiences to see The Legend Ends total 3,035,533 people, with a box office earning of 3,875,672,300 JPY.
The result of combining these two totals is over 7 million moviegoers and 9,056,400,000 JPY in box office revenue. This is likely what you’d call a mega hit. Adding in the box office earnings of the 2012 movie Rurouni Kenshin, which totalled 3.01 billion JPY, brings the trilogy total to more than 12 billion JPY. This is already a series that will leave its mark on the history of cinema. According to Warner Bros., the distributor of the films, The Legend Ends is still playing on over 240 screens throughout Japan. It seems likely that the film will break more records to come.
Rurouni Kenshin is the movie adaptation of the manga of the same name created by Nobuhiro Watsuki that was serialized from 1994-99. The movie adaptations were created under the direction of Keishi Ohtomo with popular actor Takeru Satoh playing the role of the main character, Kenshin. In addition to their stout stories, Kyoto Inferno and The Legend Ends have been heralded for their impressive scale that vastly exceeds the first film. This series is being showered in attention not just in Japan, but worldwide as well.
