Ufotable’s Resolution Becomes Clear at Advance Screening Event for Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

It’s been 10 years since it was released to the world as a PC game. Ufotable, who excited fans with the clever direction and gorgeous visuals of Fate/Zero, which can be said to be the origin of the ever-expanding Fate world, is at it again. The anime Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works has finally begun broadcasting.

While the rest of the world was still hotly anticipating the broadcast, an advance screening event called Holy Grail’s Call was held simultaneously in seven cities in five countries––Tokyo, Osaka, and Tokushima, Japan; Los Angeles, U.S.; Paris, France; Nuremberg, Germany; and Seoul, South Korea––on Sunday, Sept. 28.

In Tokyo at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater, guests who attended the screening event included director Takahiro Miura, character designer/chief animation director Tomonori Sudo, Noriaki Sugiyama (the voice of Shiro Emiya), and Ayako Kawasumi (the voice of Saber). The four of them along with fans enjoyed the screening of the 1-hour episode. After the screening concluded, the audience’s loud cheers were warmly welcomed on-stage.

Sugiyama talked about the excitement he felt, saying, “Since postrecording, I’d thought the anime would do very well, but after seeing the completed work, it exceeded my expectations by 2 or 3 times. I’m honestly surprised.” It was also revealed at this time that Episodes 1 and 2, “#00: Prologue” and “#01: Winter Day, Fate Night,” will both be 1 hour long and will show the same time period from the points of view of Rin Tohsaka and Shiro Emiya.

Possibly the first experiment of its kind in the world of TV anime series, director Miura explained, “I started with the concept of perfectly doing the source work, and because doing the normal approach seemed difficult, it ended up like this. In #00 and #01, each character’s behaviors and expressions will be the pivotal to the episodes to come, so please watch carefully.” On the topic of the forthcoming episodes maintaining the quality of the first two, chief animation director Sudo said, “Because I wasn’t able to keep my hands off the storyboards that came from production, I felt obligated to do the animation as well (laughs),” stamping his seal of approval on the quality of episodes to come.

Sudo is also in charge of character designs, and he and character planner Takashi Takeuchi have been working together for eight years. He also spoke openly about updating characters to fit the times: “I give Takeuchi old designs and he remakes them. He’s always changing them to ‘today’s’ designs. This is depicted in the 2014 characters as well.”

Regarding the famous scene in which Saber and Shiro meet for the first time, Kawasumi reminisced, “I’ve had the privilege of playing many Sabers, but I was even more strongly conscious of the fact that everything begins from this. The more I played as her and the more the work built up, there were also times when I asked myself if it was really okay for me to be saying that first line. I was more nervous for this work than any other up until now.”

Lastly, director Miura commented, “We have many more ‘tricks’ prepared from here on, so please look forward to them.”

The staff and cast put extraordinary sentiment into this work, and the broadcast finally began on Oct. 4.

[Introduction]
The setting is Fuyuki City, a city surrounded by mountains and the ocean.
This is where that ritual occurs.

In order to materialize the Holy Grail, which is said to grant the wishes of the one who possesses it, seven magicians chosen by the Holy Grail are each given a heroic spirit also chosen by the Holy Grail.

Knight - “Saber”
Lancer - “Lancer”
Archer - “Gilgamesh”
Rider - “Rider”
Magician - “Castor”
Assassin - “Assassin”
Berserker - “Berserker”

The masters form contracts with these seven spirits, and the seven teams battle to be the last one standing.

This is the Holy Grail War.
