Comic Market 86 was held for three days from Aug. 15-17 and closed as a success, with a final attendance count of 550,000 people (170,000 on Day 1, 170,000 on Day 2, and 210,000 on the final day). However, this year’s attendance was a decrease from last year’s (590,000), but the opinion of the organizers is that this lower number was the result of the measurement process of the venue having been changed.
In addition to auto maker Honda exhibiting for the first time this year, enka singer Sachiko Kobayashi 1 gathered attention at her doujin booth. The cosplay area included cosplay from Kantai Collection, Love Live!, new anime currently broadcasting, Dragon Ball, Mario Bros., One Piece, and a wide variety of other series.

Similarly to Wonder Festival and AnimeJapan, there was no shortage of foreign travelers at the venue who were visiting Japan. Even on the management side, these types of otaku events are reaching out globally little by little. This includes web pages being created in several languages starting with English. One of the world’s three biggest gaming events, Tokyo Game Show, will be held in September, and similarly to last year, attendees will likely be comprised of people from all over the world. Companies from a number of countries including America, Canada, Australia, Holland, Sweden, and South Korea will also be exhibiting.
Japan has otaku events that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Why not try attending an upcoming event and joining in on the fun?!
