The book Bodacious Space Pirates: Abyss of Hyperspace - Akiman Design Works was published on May 27. The book brings together the designs of Akiman, who worked as the animation character planner on the movie Bodacious Space Pirates: Abyss of Hyperspace which released in theaters in February of this year. Akira Yasuda, who is known by his pen name Akiman, is also known for the character designs on Gundam and Street Fighter III. His talent is displayed even in the characters of Bodacious Space Pirates.
The book is A4 size and 80 pages and publishes all in one place the design drafts used in the movie. Each of the characters is printed in color, letting viewers fully appreciate the charms of Akiman’s illustrations. Of course, this is also a book for deeply understanding the world of the series.
Akiman also participated in the TV anime for Bodacious Space Pirates. In July 2012, a book bringing together his work on the anime called Bodacious Space Pirates - Akiman Design Works was published. Apart from the art used in the TV series, the book also contains a collection of originally drawn character designs. This also includes artwork that was previously unreleased. The design drafts are introduced through comments from Akiman. Also included are mecha design drafts for the series by Akiman and illustrations from Moppai Heroines which was published in the magazine Febri. The book is also full of reading material, with interviews with Akiman, director Tatsuo Sato, animation character designer/chief animation director Osamu Hochiuchi, writer Yuichi Sasamoto, and original illustrator Noriyuki Matsumoto. The original cover illustration by Akiman is also not to be missed.
