Every year, Sanrio holds its original character popularity poll, the Sanrio Character Ranking, and this year as well many characters have entered. This time we’ll be introducing one such character named Pompompurin.
Pompompurin is a fluffy and yellow-bodied golden retriever. His trademark is the brown-colored beret he wears on his head, the shape of which resembles pudding, which is where he gets his name.
Pompompurin was created in 1996, and his gentle features and lovely body captured the hearts of females in an instant. He magnificently ranked at No. 1 in the Sanrio Character Ranking the following year. In only one year, he became Sanrio’s most popular character.
Since his debut, Pompompurin has been loved by a vast many and his popularity hasn’t fallen. In addition to this, he is popular not just among those who were in elementary school at the time of his creation but with the young generation of today as well. This can be attributed to his universal yet fascinating design.
Another of Pompompurin’s characteristics is his collaborations with food. Sanrio holds collaborations with its popular characters and a variety of businesses and products, but the collaborations between Pompompurin and sweet shops and desserts are particularly many. This is due to his name, which includes the Japanese word for pudding, purin.
Though Pompompurin generally ranks very high on the Sanrio Character Ranking, in recent years he hadn’t gotten into the top three. This changed in 2013 when he won third place for the first time in 12 years, and he’s banking on this momentum to propel him to first place this year. This doesn’t come through in his expression, though.
