Blue Exorcist, a popular manga by Kazue Kato that is currently serialized in the monthly manga magazine Jump Square (Shueisha), is becoming a stage play this year. Performances will begin this June at the Ikebukuro Sunshine Theater in Tokyo. Also, as a unique experiment, the play will be a double feature of “Awakening the Blue Flame Arc” and “Kyoto’s Unclean King Arc” for nine days from June 21-29 and span 12 shows, 6 of each arc.
Blue Exorcist began serialization in 2009. It is a dark fantasy that depicts demonic battles and is centered on Rin Okumura who is half human and half demon and his younger twin brother Yukio. The original work is a best seller with over 12 million copies sold. The series was adapted into a TV anime in 2011 and into a theatrical anime in 2012. These as well were popular. One big factor in its popularity is the depth of the bond between Rin and and his younger brother Yukio. For the stage play, Rin is being played by Hiromi Sakimoto and Yukio by Masahiro Inoue. A highlight will be how the world of the original work will be portrayed. Writing the stage play is Daisuke Nishida along with help from author Kazue Kato.
The first part, “Awakening the Blue Flame Arc,” depicts the story from the beginning including the death of Rin and Yukio’s foster father Shiro Fujimoto, Rin’s awakening, and his aim to become an Exorcist. Of course, fans will enjoy this, but even those new to the series will as well. The second part, “Kyoto’s Unclean King Arc,” is set in True Cross Academy where battles break out after someone snatches the “Left Eye of the Unclean King.”
All seating for the shows is assigned, with premium seats costing 8,800 yen and regular seats costing 6,800 yen (both prices include tax). Advance tickets went on sale April 22. General tickets will go on sale at 12:00 (JST) on May 17. Tickets can be purchased from Eplus.
