The newest work by director Yutaka Yamamoto, Wake Up, Girls! (WUG), which began in January, is headed to Chicago. The members of the titular idol unit WUG along with director Yamamoto and producer Hiroaki Takeuchi were invited as guests to this year’s large-scale anime event Anime Central to be held in Chicago, U.S. This was announced on April 13 on the official sites for WUG and Anime Central.
Out of the many events held in the U.S. themed after Japanese anime and manga, Anime Central is the third largest behind Anime Expo (Los Angeles) and Otakon (Baltimore). What’s more, it is the largest event of its kind in the central U.S. It is being held this year over three days from May 16-18 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago.
Over the three days, the members and staff of WUG will be at the event to deepen their connection with fans. In addition to participating in the opening and closing ceremonies, they will also be holding panel discussions and autograph signings. A highlight will likely be their mini concert along with a theatrical screening to be held on May 17. All seven members––Mayu Yoshioka, Yoshino Aoyama, Minami Tanaka, Nanami Yamashita, Miyu Takagi, Airi Eino, and Kaya Okuno––will appear on the 17 and 18. It seems that just like Japan, their grassroots exchange will be widening abroad as well. There is no doubt that the panel discussions will also be popular with overseas fans due to director Yamamoto’s excellent speech skills. WUG fans should keep their eyes glued to Chicago this May.
WUG is a talked-about work that began in January with the simultaneous release of a full-length theatrical movie and the broadcast of the TV anime. The series shows the growth of not just the main characters, but the voice actresses who play them as well since all of them are newcomers. These members will now finally make their live debut at a large event overseas. WUG and the activities of its members will be widening even more from here on.
