Natural Doctrine, which will be releasing in April on the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita, is the first simulation RPG by newly formed Kadokawa Game Studio.
Set in a fantasy world of swords and magic, the game features a heavy story of humans facing off against evil races and tribes. Before playing the version still in development, I had somewhere heard a rumor that it was difficult, but I thought that it couldn’t be as bad as I was hearing, given the trend of recent simulation RPGs… How very wrong I was.
I started out on normal, and just when I thought I was doing well progressing through stages, there was an “accident” on a stage in which I encountered for the first time a ferocious beast called a Grion that had escaped. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn’t beat it. Over and over again, in spite of the scene of retreat, my ally wasn’t able to escape and was defeated, leading to a game over. Feeling a sense of defeat, I ended up lowering the difficulty to easy. I was able to brave the tough fights and advance from then on, but it was still so hard, I wouldn’t think of it as easy.
Because this is a game not beaten by ordinary methods, and because it’s the first seemingly heartbreakingly difficult game in a long time, we tried creating a gameplay video introducing the basic systems of the game, which we have published here. Because we ended up winning in the end, the cruelty and despair of actually playing the game might not come through, but we’d like to point out that just filming this one stage took 10 retakes.
