Ghost in the Shell 25th Anniversary Commemorative Site Opens, Exhibit and Music Event Announced

This year marks the 25th anniversary since Masamune Shirow’s sci-fi manga Ghost in the Shell began serialization in 1989 in Kodansha’s Young Magazine Pirate Edition. Since its start, it has been developed into other media including TV anime, movies, and games. It is now considered to be one of Japan’s representative series. A variety of special projects are in store to celebrate this milestone. To start, a 25th anniversary site opened on March 12.

Another project is “Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border:Less Project” on which director Katsuyuki Motohiro is project producer. This project will include five short movies themed after the series. Of course, they will each be a different take on the world of Ghost in the Shell. For the project, director Motohiro is in charge of choosing the young creators who will participate, as well as participating himself by directing one of the short movies. Since each creator will convey the world of Ghost in the Shell in their own unique way, the content of the project will be multifaceted. An event screening for this project is already planned to take place on March 28 at Toho Cinemas in Nihonbashi.

Also, this monumental sci-fi anime is finally getting the digital treatment and will be released as an ebook on June 20. This development is right in line with the world of Ghost in the Shell. It has also been announced that a large exhibit will be held. This exhibit will take a look back at the 25-year history of the series through original artwork and production illustrations. An Arise music event collaborating with Space Shower TV, which also turns 25 this year, will also be held. More information on these events is forthcoming.

The following is a comment from author Masamune Shirow regarding the series turning 25: “It is my humble opinion that the fact that this ‘hard to read, minor, unliterary manga’ has continued for 25 years is due to the strenuous efforts of the publisher and everyone involved with the anime, games, movies, and comic. Since it hasn’t been ongoing the entire time, saying this is the 25th anniversary is a bit strange. But in any case, it is a milestone, so please let it slide (haha).”
