New Visual of Kikaider Reboot Shows an Asymmetrical Kikaider, Daisuke Ban Also to Appear in Movie

Shotaro Ishinomori’s special-effects TV drama Android Kikaider that began in 1972 is getting a reboot 40 years later. The movie Kikaider Reboot is gaining massive attention and will be released Japan-wide on May 24. Meanwhile, visuals of the newly resurrected Kikaider and his archenemy Hakaider have been released. The biggest peculiarity is that the new Kikaider has inherited the unique asymmetrical design of the former Kikaider. This touch will capture the heart’s of long-time fans.

Playing the part of main character Jiro who transforms into Kikaider is Jinki Irie, and he makes a strong impression in the visuals. Regarding the design, he had the following to say: “While daringly keeping with the 41-year-old design, there are many subtle differences in the blue and red design. I think the designs of justice and evil are even more emphasized.” He also had this to say about Hakaider’s design: “It evokes the dark side feelings that all men yearn for; it’s so cool it’s almost criminal! It’s awesome how the brain is exposed (laughs).”

“The new visuals aren’t to simply show the modern, stylish designs. We focused on how best to preserve the old Kikaider,” explained producer Shinichiro Shirakura of Toei regarding the intent of the visuals. He pointed out that, “The gentleness and strength of Kikaider is expressed through the curvy, retro design. Even for Hakaider, though we aimed for a cool, dark hero look, if you look closely, we gave him sweet round eyes and a smile so as to preserve his human charm.” He showed his confidence in the designs by saying, “In the end, I think for both we were able to create “designs mixed with fun” that we seeked that were born from fun and crossed over the limits of modeling technology.” Look forward to intense battles between these two reborn characters.

Also, it has been officially announced that Daisuke Ban, who played Jiro in the TV drama, will play the mysterious psychologist Kyujiro Maeno in the movie. The new Kikaider, Irie, and the former Kikaider appearing together will power up Kikaider Reboot even more when it sweeps over Japan this year.

Kikaider Reboot

[Cast Comments]
Jinki Irie (Jiro / Kikaider):
Reviving Kikaider after 41 years and having the mega role of Jiro; I am ecstatic! When I met Ban, who played the same role, for the first time, he told me “Don’t worry!” and passed me the baton. Kikaider has a heart called the Conscience Circuit, but he’s an android. I’m playing him so as not to portray him as a one-sided character with some such vexing and boring existence. Please watch it!

Daisuke Ban (Kyujiro Maeno):
Hi everyone, it’s been a long time. I’m extremely happy to once again be able to take part in the world of Kikaider. This time, I’m playing Kyujiro (former Jiro). The new Jiro, Irie, has a tall stature and is the athletic type! I can’t wait to see what this modern, youthful Jiro will do! The movie is a “love story” that will warm your heart after watching it. I’m very moved to have this dream work of mine becoming a reality.
