Since it’s start in 1982, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross has become a hugely successful anime series, with continuous new releases up unto the present day. Now, it has been announced that a special Blu-ray box set of the series’ second installment, Macross II: Lovers Again, will be released. It will be available July 25, 2014, as a two-disc set.
The six-episode installment The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again was originally released in 1992 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Macross series. Macross II inherited the sci-fi, mecha, musical, and complicated romantic elements of the original series and spun them in a new way to create a unique Macross world. Two original staff returned for Macross II, including character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, and scriptwriter Sukehiro Tomita, while director Kenichi Yatagai made his Macross series debut. Macross II is somewhat of an underappreciated masterpiece within the franchise. In the Blu-ray box set, all of the artwork has been brought back to life with HD negative scanning technology.
The special features are also chock-full of goodies. Of course, there’s the standard information booklet, but this one’s said to be the longest yet, at about 100 pages. In the special features section of the disc, you can enjoy the original opening and closing sequences without the credit text.
Also, don’t miss Mikimoto’s spectacular illustrations on the disc case and inner jacket. The box set costs ￥13,800 (tax not included) and will be produced for a limited time until July 24, 2015.
