Gearing Up for Season 2: A Look Back at the First Season of Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea (Part 3)

Looking toward Season 2: A story in between fantasy and romance.

Taking place in a fantastical world divided by sea and land, Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea tells a love story between young boys and girls caught in the midst of adolescence. In this world, an important ritual that connects the land and sea is one in which an “Ojōshi-sama” is placed on a small ceremonial boat called an Ofunehiki that is set out to sea.

During the year in which Hikari and friends transfer to a school on land, the relations between sea people and land people worsen and the Ofunehiki is called off. Due to a proposal by their class representative, Hikari and the others decide to voluntarily build the Ojōshi-sama themselves, but hindering them along the way is Miuna and Sayu who both want to change the relationship between Akari and Itaru. Their finished Ojōshi-sama is then destroyed.

However, as a result of this turmoil, bonds form between Hikari, Miuna, their friends, and their classmates. In Episode 5, there is a scene in which Hakari embraces Miuna underwater and shares with her his feelings. This can likely be said to be the climax of the first half of the season.

The Ojōshi-sama, which becomes tied to the sentiments of the young boys and girls from the worlds of the land and sea, is once again destroyed at a meeting between the residents of Shioshishio and the fishermen. Although this gives Hikari an opportunity to begin living on land, the “saltflake snow” also begins falling on land at the same time. The residents of the sea village see this as an omen of an impending disaster, and they decide to prepare to hibernate until the sea god regains his power.

Meanwhile on the surface, Hikari tries to carry out the Ofunehiki yet again in the hopes of restoring the land people’s faith in the sea god. Waves of significant change stir, causing them to requestion yet again the feelings of those around them.

What they are shaken most by are the sentiments of four people from the sea village. It seems that when the hibernation period begins differs for everyone. But if that’s true, they may not be able to spend anymore time with everyone. Feeling impatient due to this time limit, Kaname confesses to Chisaki, Hikari confesses to Manaka, and Chisaki confesses to Hikari.

From here on, how will these young boys and girls slip through the waves of their precariously swaying emotions? The roller coaster ride of emotion depicted in Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea is just reaching the end of its prologue.
