Knights of Sidonia, which will begin its TV broadcast in spring 2014, is a sensation. Along with the announcement of the staff and cast of the anime on Nov. 9, the composer and sound director have now been appointed. The work is picking up attention for its wonderful cast and staff, and they are putting just as much effort into the music side. The work has become recognized for its story, visuals, and now music.

The music composer is Noriyuki Asakura, the sound director is Yoshikazu Iwanami, the sound production studio is Studio Mausu, and the music production studio is Starchild Records. Asakura is known for his work on such series as Rurouni Kenshin and Tenchū. Iwanami often works on popular hit series, which have recently included Psycho-Pass and Girls und Panzer.

The anime adaptation of Knights of Sidonia is based on the sci-fi manga of the same name by Tsutomu Nihei that is currently serialized in Kodansha’s monthly magazine Afternoon. The manga is up to its 11th individual volume.

A portion of humanity, which fled into space after the destruction of Earth lives on the massive ship Sidonia where they develop improved ways of breeding and manufacturing while traveling the cosmos. This story takes place 1,000 years later. A young boy named Nagate Tanikaze living in the lower area of Sidonia is in training to pilot the large mecha called Guardians. Gauna
Tanikaze boards the groundbreaking, high-performance mecha Tsugumori to fight for humanity against the mysterious alien race Gauna who are said to have destroyed Earth.

Knights of Sidonia is also picking up attention due to Polygon Pictures being the studio behind the anime’s production. Polygon Pictures celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, having been established in 1983, and is a studio known for being a frontrunner of CG animation in Japan. Some of the series the studio has worked on recently that are highly well known even overseas are Transformers: Prime (winner at the 39th Daytime Emmys), Tron: Uprising (winner at the 40th Annie Awards), and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (winner at the 40th Daytime Emmys). Staff on the anime includes Kōbun Shizuno as director, Hiroyuki Seshita as assistant director, Sadayuki Murai as series composer and writer, Naoya Tanaka as production designer, Mitsunori Kataama as modeling director, Masayuki Uemoto as CG supervisor, Eiji Okushi as battle animatics supervisor, and Yūki Moriyama as character designer. It seems fans can expect this veteran staff to break new ground.
