Nuigurumaa Z, a tokusatsu (special effects) movie about a unique heroine, will be released in Japan on Jan. 25, 2014. Due to the movie being an adaptation of Kenji Otsuki’s song “Fight! Nuigurumaa,” its production process has also been unique. The work was introduced for the first time on Oct. 26 at Koenji Fes 2013 held in Suginami, Tokyo. An event and discussion enlivened the crowd.
At a glance, there may be people who are wondering why Koenji Fes was chosen as the place at which to show Nuigurumaa Z. The truth is, Koenji is depicted as the work’s setting. The movie uses scenes from Koenji and even on-site shooting in Koenji. The superb staff and cast of the movie has also become talked about. Playing the main character is Shoko Nakagawa, and Kazuya Tsurumaki and Shigeto Koyama who both worked on the Evangelion series are the character designers.
Appearing on stage for the event was director Noboru Iguchi and actresses Rina Takeda, Mao Ichimichi, and Koto Takagi. They discussed the movie being filmed in Koenji and showed a trailer of the movie for the first time. Then, as a surprise special guest, the mascot character of Suginami, Namisuke, appeared on stage. Namisuke has been the mascot of Suginami since 2006. This veteran mascot who turned seven this year appeared in support of the movie.
During the discussion, the director was surrounded by girls and commented to this fact. Also, Takeda, Ichimichi, and Takagi talked about episodes that occurred during filming and more. Takeda dressing up as Nuigurumaa and fending off zombies also made the crowd go wild. However, she admitted, “This is my first time wearing this outfit in public, so I’m a bit nervous.” Lastly, each performer delivered a message to the crowd and the event came to a close.
