Finale of “TeniMu” Musical to Be Simulcast Live in Theaters Throughout Japan

It seems that the long-running, hugely popular stage musical The Prince of Tennis will see an especially large surge in its popularity this autumn. This is due to the stage musical coming to movie theaters.

On Sept. 29, the finale of the musical titled “Musical ‘The Prince of Tennis’ Nationwide Tournament: Seigaku vs. Hyōtei” will be held at Tokyo Dome City Hall in Kōraku-en, Tokyo. A live simulcast of this performance will also be held in theaters across Japan by Live Viewing Japan. Furthermore, the event “Musical ‘The Prince of Tennis’ TeniMu Movie Festival 2013” will be held beginning on Oct. 5.

The musical The Prince of Tennis is based on the popular manga of the same name by Takeshi Konomi. The musical, also known as TeniMu, began in the spring of 2003 and picked up popularity and attention. After 10 years, TeniMu has broken through 1.5 million viewers in total.

Currently, TeniMu is in its second season, which began in August 2010. The live viewing on Sept. 29 will showcase the intense national tournament quarterfinal match between Seigaku and Hyōtei. This finale will give the musical a huge surge, and it will be a performance that fans can fully enjoy. Tickets to the simulcast are for general admission only and cost 3,500 yen each (tax included). Continuing on from this, the TeniMu Movie Festival 2013 will be held in theaters for three weeks from Oct. 5-25. Each week, a new movie will be screened from the musical’s second season beginning with “Seigaku vs. Rikkai,” then “Seigaku vs. Higa,” and finally “National Tournament: Seigaku vs. Hyōtei.” This is a chance for fans to see all of the musicals in rapid succession or to relive each of them once more. These screenings will also be general admission and tickets will be moderately priced at 1,800 yen each. An exception to this is the screening that will also include a stage greeting, which will cost 2,500 yen per ticket.

From early on, the musical The Prince of Tennis has asserted itself with live viewings meant to respond to the needs of those fans who want to see it. It seems it can be said that the development of live viewings is closely tied to the popularity of the musical.
